What are the benefits of an E-license plate?

Since 2015, the new Electric Mobility Act has been in effect. However, the regulations are implemented inconsistently nationwide, as each municipality freely decides which measures to introduce.

Possible benefits include:

• Potential free parking while charging at charging stations

• Potential free charging

• Potential use of bus lanes
  

Notes on the E-license plate

• The E-license plate is not mandatory for electric vehicles. You must inform us before registration if you want an E-license plate.

• For custom license plates, the additional E cannot be reserved. However, you must account for one position for the E. For example, if the combination GM-AB 1234 fits on a plate, for an E-license plate, one digit or letter less must be used. In this case, you would reserve GM-A 1234 or GM-AB 123.

• Even an electric car requires a particulate matter sticker.
  

Vehicle Tax and SEPA Direct Debit Mandate

• Only pure electric vehicles are exempt from vehicle tax for up to 10 years starting from the initial registration date. This applies to registrations between May 18, 2011, and December 31, 2025. The tax exemption is granted until December 31, 2030, at the latest. – You do not need to provide a SEPA direct debit mandate.

• This exemption does not apply to hybrid electric vehicles. – A SEPA direct debit mandate is required during registration.
  

Which vehicles can receive an E-license plate?

• Pure battery electric vehicles

• Fuel cell vehicles

• Plug-in hybrid vehicles emitting no more than 50 g CO2/km or having a minimum electric range of 40 km. (For vehicles registered until December 31, 2017: minimum range of 30 km)
  

Which vehicle classes are eligible to display an E-license plate?

• Class M1 (Passenger Cars)

• Class N1 (Trucks up to 3.5 tons permissible gross weight)

• Class L3e and Class L4e (Motorcycles with a maximum speed > 45 km/h)

• Class L5e (Three-wheeled vehicles with a maximum speed > 45 km/h)

• Class L7e (Four-wheeled vehicles with a total weight up to 400 or 550 kg)

Requirements:

You must provide proof of eligibility for an E-license plate with

• the EC Certificate of Conformity (COC document)

• or the data confirmation from the holder of the General Operating Permit (ABE)

• or the individual vehicle approval.
