Do you want to buy or sell a vehicle?

Some Tips

• Buy or sell a vehicle only with the complete vehicle documents: Registration Certificate Part I and Part II (vehicle registration and title). The buyer needs both for re-registration.

• Seller: Before handing over the vehicle to the buyer, it is best to deregister your vehicle. Always deregister the vehicle before selling it abroad!

• The buyer can apply for a temporary license plate for transportation or a customs license plate for export.
   

Purchase Agreement

• Always create a purchase agreement. Good sample agreements can be found on the websites of automobile clubs or vehicle testing organizations. You can also find additional tips there.

• Car dealers usually have their own contracts. Ensure that all important details are included in the dealer's contract.

• Check the ID card of your contract partner.
   

What should be included in the agreement?

• Personal details of the seller and buyer: Name, first name, date of birth, address, phone number – all in print and clearly legible!

• Details about the vehicle: Manufacturer, type, vehicle identification number, license plate number, date of first registration, next main inspection

• Condition of the vehicle, known damages

• Confirmation of the handover of the vehicle, Registration Certificate Part I and Part II, keys, possibly license plates, accessories, and purchase price

• Location, date, signature of the seller and buyer
   

If documents are missing

• The buyer needs the complete vehicle documents to re-register the vehicle.

• The seller is responsible for handing over all documents. If something is missing, they must apply for replacement documents before the sale.

• Information about loss of Registration Certificate Part I or II (vehicle registration/title)
   

Registered vehicle – please note:

• Risks/Disadvantages for the seller: If you sell a registered vehicle, you pay taxes and insurance until re-registration. You may receive traffic fines, and in case of an accident, your no-claims bonus class may change.

• The buyer must deregister or re-register the vehicle as soon as possible.

• The seller sends a copy of the contract/the notice of sale to their car insurance and registration office. For the Oberbergischer Kreis: by email to zulassung@obk.de or by post to Oberbergischer Kreis, Straßenverkehrsamt, Kölner Straße 235, 51645 Gummersbach.
  Sending the sales notification alone is not sufficient for the deregistration of the vehicle by the registration authority not possible.

• Seller and buyer should stay in contact until the vehicle is deregistered or re-registered.
