River floods

During prolonged rainfall and sometimes also during snowmelt, water levels in large rivers rise continuously, which can lead to overflow.

Such natural events are monitored by flood centers. Experts can predict quite well when the highest water levels will be reached in river regions.
This gives those affected in flood areas time to prepare for the danger.

Flash flood

In good weather, we find streams and brooks idyllic. However, during heavy rain, even rivulets can turn into raging rivers and overflow their banks. The tricky part is that these events rarely give long notice. After the rain starts, it often takes only a few hours for the flood to arrive. The danger often comes overnight.

If you are an immediate resident near a brook, ensure that you do not obstruct the flow in the brook, for example, by storing green waste  in the bank area or installing footbridges, stairs, and similar structures!

Groundwater flooding

Rising water levels in rivers and brooks also cause groundwater to rise. This can then seep through the soil into otherwise dry cellars. In the worst case, the buoyant forces can jeopardize the structural stability of the building.
